Beeches Cottage at Buckland Court is the largest of the eight Lower Yard cottages converted from the original farm buildings grouped around an attractive courtyard.

Beeches - Living/dining area

The cottage has gas fired centrally heating and sleeps six to eight adults (or children of course!) in three bedrooms with full-size beds, and a high quality sofa bed.

There are duvets on all beds.  Bed Linen & towels can be hired.

Downstairs, a striking feature of the cottage is its spacious (34' x 17') open plan living and dining room.  The dining area has an Oak laminated floor and a fully equipped kitchen, including microwave, freezer and dishwasher.  There is a step down to the large living area, with two big three seater sofas (one being a full-sized sofa-bed) and three armchairs. There is a TV, DVD and stereo system.

Upstairs a huge picture window looks out from the landing over the orchard and gardens.

Beeches - Lounge

The master suite comprises a large double bedroom with sofa, TV and a new Victorian style wainscoted en suite bathroom.  The bedroom has views over the duck ponds, the gardens and across rolling countryside towards Dartmoor.  There are two further good sized twin bedrooms each with two 3ft beds and a second newly fitted bathroom.  Both the family bathroom and the en suite have showers over the baths.

Beeches Cottage's spacious living and dining accommodation means that it can be used in conjunction with neighbouring cottages as the base for larger parties and yet it is cosy enough for intimate family holidays.

Outside, Beeches Cottage opens on to a pleasant courtyard with a raised lawn area in the middle with table and benches, ideal for al fresco lunches or a quiet evening drink.  There is also a bench seat just outside the front door.

There is a large communal laundry room with coin operated washing machine, dryer and freezer for the use of guests.

South Devons Heritage Steam Railways

We are fortunate in the South Hams to have two well known and popular Steam Railways running alongside the river Dart.

Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway

One of the most scenic train rides to be found anywhere, try the Paignton to Kingswear (Dartmouth) line.  Re-live the great days of steam railway travel.  Your steam locomotive starts from Paignton Station passing Paignton Sands and Quaywest Water Park.

This rail journey takes in the spectacular Torbay coastline and runs through the wooded hills along the Dart Estuary.  After going past Churston, the train runs inland and proceeds alongside the river Dart before terminating at Kingswear.

Dartmouth Station

From Kingswear take either the Lower ferry or passenger train ferry across the river to Dartmouth station, probably one of the only stations never to have seen a train.  Dartmouth is the home of the Britannia Royal Naval College, Bayards Cove, Butterwalk and Dartmouth Castle; England's first Castle to have guns as its main armament.

It's also possible to combine your rail journey with a river pleasure cruise from Dartmouth to Totnes and a coach ride returning to your start point.  The Dartmouth River Cruise winds it's way along the river cruising past the home of the late Dame Agatha Christie and the pretty little villages of Dittisham and Galmpton.  An interesting and slightly humorous commentary is provided by the Skipper.  Look out for the wildlife; cormorants, kingfishers and seals are very often spotted!

Locomotive 5786

Enjoy this fascinating journey that stretches out over the entire day The scenery is breathtaking, along the spectacular English Riviera and Dart river.  This is one of the finest heritage steam railway journeys anywhere in Europe.

To make a truly special day out, book one of our combined river excursions - Round Robin Trip or Steam & Cruise.

The steam train operates from April to October and fantastic Santa Steam Specials during December.

South Devon Railway

The South Devon Railway is one of Devon's and the West Country's best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west.

Locomotive 70013

It is a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes.  Steam trains run with heritage rolling stock and offer a wonderful all day attraction for families and people of all ages.

While you are at Buckfastleigh, you can visit the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies: 3 Great Attractions, 1 Amazing Day.

Just off the A38 at Buckfastleigh, very close to the famous Buckfast Abbey, or by train to Totnes on the Great Western main line.

In recent years the engineering workshops at Buckfastleigh have been expanded to be able to service and rebuild our wonderful heritage steam engines.  Many old pieces of machines have been re sited here from around the country to form a centre of engineering excellence for the Heritage railway industry.

Famous visiting steam engines from the National Collection are often spotted on this line.
